European Union Could Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson Says

The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the US against five European individuals involved in combating digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.

European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans targeted individuals who have been at the heart of campaigns to introduce laws governing American tech companies.

“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to punish US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in criticizing the decision.

The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities contend the regulations are necessary to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.

This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and Europe.
