The Film 'Together' Is Now Streaming, and It Might Make or Break Your Relationship.

We present a test for partners in committed relationships who appreciate horror films: Settle in with your partner and stream Together. This critically acclaimed 2025 movie just made its launch on a streaming platform via Hulu. On the surface, it could look like typical biological terror, but beneath Together resides a profound examination about the ways we decide to love our partners.

A Directorial Debut Delving into The Nuances of Love

Together represents the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It features actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Tim and Millie, partners that have stayed together for a decade. Married in real life in 2017, the two stars bring a special spark to their portrayals, expertly portraying both the joys and frustrations of a committed partnership.

The narrative commences when Millie and Tim relocate from the big city to the countryside for her career. A somewhat stereotypical plot device, sure, but that’s largely where the tropes end. Together evolves into as much a examination of mental states of the pair’s relationship as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While walking near their new home, a storm hits, and the two discover an subterranean cavern. After a night spent there and eventually escaping, a supernatural entity begins influencing the pair. This force creates a paranormal intimacy between them that goes far beyond typical partnership.

The complete narrative is a gradually intensifying of scares, blending elements of fever-dream horrors, disturbing (but tastefully done) biological grotesqueries, and surprisingly comedic exchanges (sometimes in the middle of something grotesque). Michael Shanks skillfully blends these components neatly and wraps them up in a gradually swelling sense of impending doom.

Nuanced Portrayals

A great deal of Together is exclusively the two lead actors, and they masterfully render manifold depths to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie's sense of self and sense of connection is waning due to a distance. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his unwillingness to focus on anything other than his floundering music career slowly bubbles to the surface.

In contrast, Tim's character senses confinement and separated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve left the city and far away from his social circle. He is terrified of the idea of totally forfeiting his individual identity in his partner. This fear is further exacerbated by the reality he lacks a driver's license and relies on Millie for getting around.

The film's most intelligent aspect is that he refrains from painting Tim or Millie the definite antagonist.

The couple face the type of challenges that are inherent in long-term unions after ten years. Deep down, they continue to care for one another. They still laugh together, provide solace, and open up at times. But below this facade, there’s an inescapable feeling of questioning about their relationship.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the paranormal elements in Together symbolize these fears of excessive reliance and giving oneself over to another person, the symbolism does not come across as overly obvious or self-important. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments present a perfect parallel to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the horror and the drama enhance each other symbiotically.

A Debated Finale

Together’s final act, which remains unspoiled, has created disagreement on the film’s ultimate message about codependent relationships. It has been said that single viewers have understood the narrative as a powerful case for avoiding commitment. On the other hand, certain partners having disagreements found that the film actually helped them resolve their issues.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own interpretation could function as a great barometer of how you think about commitment. Will the ending inspire anxiety and horror, or a positive outlook on love? Will you identify in Tim or Millie and feel frustration, or simply turn to your partner and say, “We could get through that together”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an test you can embark on right now.

Together is currently playing on the streaming service Hulu as of this moment.
