Weather balloons transporting a large quantity of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was forced to close for several hours when dozens of them entered the national airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The temporary shutdown led to the cancellation of 30 flights disrupting six thousand travelers, with authorities cautioning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Authorities reported that twenty-five weather balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two of which ending up precisely above the airport's airspace.
Up to 14 of the meteorological devices launched over the weekend floated over the capital region, which is home to Lithuania's main urban center and close to the border with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
A minimum of 11 balloons carrying 18,000 packs of illegal tobacco products have since been recovered, though this number could rise, according to customs agents.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
While creating issues, representatives clarified that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - Belarusian smoking products - are common occurrences in the Baltic region and Poland."
Since January, over five hundred weather devices have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been documented the previous year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Meanwhile, the border area of Poland, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has registered in excess of numerous instances in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the weather devices.
Illegal Transport Methods
In response to questions about why criminals use a approach that remains highly susceptible to weather elements rather than more controllable drones, authorities explained that "Atmospheric equipment are simple mechanisms used by illegal traders - they are less expensive than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Officials added that "Our services' aim is to capture the greatest possible volumes of smuggled items and to arrest masterminds and participants so that this activity become economically unsustainable and do not pose risk to commercial air travel."
European Tensions
Such border infiltrations occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have resulted in flight interruptions across European nations.
Recent incidents in nearby states have led European authorities to speed up talks about enhancing aerial security throughout the continent.
